CNC TANGENTIAL OSCILLATING KNIFE CUTTING – PE FOAM, PU FOAM, XLPE FOAM

Examples of CNC Oscillating Knife Cutting

A CNC Tangential Oscillating Knife, also known as a flash cutting machine or a CNC knife machine, cuts flexible foam and gasket materials using a high-speed oscillating movement across the foam, giving a precise and clean cut.

No tooling or dies are necessary, so if you need a sample prototype, have a low volume production, or anticipate making changes in the future, an Oscillating Knife can be preferred. Layering can be used to increase 3-dimensional designs. CNC Tangential Oscillating Knives can cut up to 6”. With CNC, there is no concavity effect like with die cutting. Concavity is when the foam gets a curved shape which can happen on thicker foam when using a steel rule die which compresses against the foam. CNC tangential oscillating knife are usually less expensive to run than a water jet.

Advantages of a CNC Oscillating Knife Cutter:

High Precision

CNC tangential oscillating knife cutting provides high precision and accuracy, allowing for intricate shapes and tight tolerances to be achieved with minimal kerf width. This precision makes it suitable for cutting complex designs with sharp corners and intricate details.

Versatility:

CNC tangential oscillating knife cutting can be used with a wide range of foam materials. It is particularly well-suited for cutting foam materials of varying densities and thicknesses.

No Heat Affected Zone (HAZ):

CNC tangential oscillating knife cutting is a cold cutting process, meaning it does not generate heat during cutting. This eliminates the risk of thermal damage to the foam material, such as melting, warping, or discoloration, allowing for clean and precise cuts without altering the material properties.

No Material Contact:

CNC tangential oscillating knife cutting is a non-contact cutting method, which means there is no physical force applied to the foam material during cutting. This minimizes the risk of deformation or damage to the foam, making it ideal for cutting delicate or fragile materials.

Minimal Waste:

CNC tangential oscillating knife cutting produces minimal material waste, as the oscillating knife follows the cutting path precisely, optimizing material usage. This helps reduce costs and environmental impact by minimizing scrap and maximizing material yield.

Environmentally Friendly:

CNC tangential oscillating knife cutting is an environmentally friendly cutting method, as it does not produce hazardous fumes, dust, or by-products. The process uses mechanical motion to cut through materials, making it a clean and eco-friendly option for foam cutting.

Speed:

CNC tangential oscillating knife cutting can achieve high cutting speeds, resulting in fast turnaround times for foam products. This rapid production capability is advantageous for meeting tight deadlines and responding quickly to customer demands.

No Tooling Required:

Unlike other cutting methods that require custom tooling or dies, CNC tangential oscillating knife cutting does not require any specialized tooling. This reduces setup time and costs associated with tooling, allowing for faster and more cost-effective production and less costs when making changes.

Multi-Layer Cutting:

CNC tangential oscillating knife cutting can cut through multiple layers of foam material simultaneously, making it suitable for applications requiring laminated or stacked foam products. This capability allows for efficient production of multi-layered foam assemblies with precise alignment.

Minimal Edge Finishing Required:

CNC tangential oscillating knife cutting produces clean and smooth edges on foam materials, typically eliminating the need for additional finishing or post-processing. This saves time and labor costs associated with edge cleanup or deburring.

Scalability:

CNC tangential oscillating knife cutting is easily scalable to accommodate varying production demands. Whether customers need a few prototypes or thousands of foam pieces, die cutting processes can be tailored to meet their specific volume requirements efficiently and cost-effectively.

Cut Height:

Compared to other methods of cutting foam, water jet cutting can make thicker cuts through foam, up to 8 inches or more, which is superior to CNC knife cutting and die cutting.

Depth Control:

CNC tangential oscillating knife cutting can be finely tuned to control whether foam is cut all the way through or not which allows pieces to remain connected for plucking later or for making hinges in the foam.

Disadvantages of a CNC Oscillating Knife Cutter:

Limited Versatility:

CNC tangential oscillating knife cutting is best suited for cutting flat or 2D shapes from foam sheets. It may not be suitable for cutting complex 3D shapes or contoured profiles, which require more specialized cutting methods such as CNC routing. 3D shapes and pockets require multi layering of material.
